Bookmans News
Yesterday, the Capitol Christmas tree arrived in Washington D.C. and was presented to Congress. For the first time ever, Arizona was selected to provide the Capitol with an eighty-five foot tall blue spruce, harvested from the White Mountains. Arizona also provided another first. The tree made it's way across the country in the greenest way possible, using bio diesel fuel. Bookmans was proud to be part of this holiday tradition every step of the way. We provided the organizers with a hybrid car to transport their staff behind the tree. The caravan made stops throughout the United States, spreading holiday cheer and the message of living green.
If any of you know our owner, Bob, then you know he has a passion for electric vehicles. And you've probably seen the old electric car charging station that we've had at our Grant location for years. Well, this morning we made groundbreaking progress as we jackhammered away the old charging station to prepare for the installation of a more efficient EV station, manufactured by Coulomb Technologies.

For the last 10 years Bookmans has been a proud sponsor of the Educational Enrichment Foundation (EEF), which is a phenomonal and inspirational program that supports low-income and at-risk youth in the Tucson community. Since 1983, EEF's mission has been to provide resources to students in need, and to enrich student learning in the Tucson Unified School District. Their Special Needs program caters to specific needs of the students, such as vision and hearing care, and to provide clothing and shoes. Since the late 80's the EEF Shoe Shopping Program has been in operation, making sure that students who need new shoes anytime during the school year will have access to them. Each year, EEF partners with Payless Shoes to host up to eight shoe shopping days for the children. Each day is funded by a local business, civic group or individual donor that provides financial resources and volunteers to assist the students in choosing their new shoes. This is where Bookmans steps in.

What an amazing turnout we had at the grand opening celebration of our new Coulomb Chargepoint EV (electric vehicle) charging station at Bookmans Grant. We are very proud to have Tucson's support to make this an official EV-friendly city. The Electric Vehicle Association was in attendance, and our parking lot was filled with classic and modern EV's. Bob Oldfather, owner of Bookmans, put his classic collection of electric vehicles on display for the public to see. Also, two new Teslas made their Tucson debut to get recharged. Bookmans was one of their many stops as they trek across the nation to show that EV cars can serve as a long distance mode of transportation.

Flagstaff's community theatre, Theatrikos Theatre Company, is currently shooting an independent, local film that is getting the whole community involved, and Bookmans will be one setting for a key scene in the film. Production started just a few weeks ago, and, so far, they’ve shot scenes at Flagstaff Floral, The Orpheum and Mia's Bar. The script calls for a scene to be shot in a bookstore - the main character is an author and is doing a book signing, and Bookmans was a natural choice for the scene!
As the holiday season winds down, our store hours will continue to be a little different this week. We wanted to give you a heads-up in case you were hoping to splurge at our stores with your holiday gift money and didn't know when our doors would be open.
Unfortunately, the Sweet Willie D performance that was scheduled at our Grant location on January 9th has been cancelled.
