Bookman's Blog
I've worked at Bookmans for six years now and fancy myself an "expert" in many fields of knowledge. We don't have computers to look up inventory, which essentially forces Bookmans employees to "just know." It's very Tao. As employees we occasionally get big heads about our amassed knowledge. Then we get a request/book look that just knocks us off our knowledge mountain and reminds us that we do not "know" everything. One such event happened to me last weekend.
I answered the phone and was asked if we had First Things First. I hadn't heard of it so I asked if the customer knew the author and what kind of book it was. She informed me that it was by Kurt Warner. Still nothing on my end. She then told me that is was his autobiography. I asked what it was that he was know for. She said, "He's a Cardinal." (I could tell at this point that she was rather shocked that I did not know this author.) To which I replied, "Like the Pope?" Revealing that I am neither Catholic nor a sports fan. She then informed me that he was a football player.
We didn't have a copy of his book. My pride was only slightly wounded by this lack of sports knowledge until I was informed by a co-worker that he was here in Flagstaff at traning camp. Here. Shopping at the Target and buying breakfast from another co-worker's girlfriend. I guess its time to put down Jane Eyre and pick up a newspaper.
