Bookmans News

The old Flagstaff Bookmans store is being demolished! Driving by, one can see that everything that made up the old store, including the roof, all internal fixtures and merchandise have been bulldozed halfway through the sales floor, all the way to the kids’ area. It is a little sad to see our old store disappear entirely, but it’s also exciting to watch the progress. All that remains of the front half of the store is a concrete floor and a few steel beams. One can see the “electronics” sign, but no electronics, café, counter or games remain. The view from the front is of the orange bookcases that border the kids’ area of the store.

As you’ve likely heard, we plan to be up and running by fall of 2010, and this is the first step in the process! The new store will have everything folks grew to know and love about the old store: including all of the same areas such as the café, electronics counter, kids’ area, CDs, magazines etc. Bookmans employees are also averaging about three outside buys per day, making trips as far as the Verde Valley to people’s homes to buy great stuff. Today, we’ll be driving south to look at a huge private collection of paperback books. If you have a big lot of stuff you think we might want to see, call us at our warehouse at (928) 556-0288. Contemplating that empty bulldozed space, you can tell we’ll need to work hard over the next few months to fill it back up with all the great merchandise you’ve come to expect from Bookmans!

Hey... there's some good merchandise there! Don't bulldoze it all away!

Why did you leave the books on the shelves? Doesn't one usually clear out the old store before destroying it? Do you have that little regard for books? How many books are being destroyed by this process?

The books you see were exposed to rain and snow and suffered moisture damage and as a result were ruined. Although it looks like we are destroying books, they are actually not salvageable. We were unable to enter any part of the store to remove books prior to the demo, because it would have been risking the safety of our staff or anyone else. It was crushing to have to part with those books but we didn't have a choice.

Such a sad sad picture. I live in Las Vegas and visit Flagstaff a few times a year for the purpose of going to Bookmans. Breaks my heart. Can't wait for the store to be back up and running.

Jacki,

Do you know if Bookman's credits will still be good when it is rebuilt? I have about $19 in A level credits. Also, can people donate smaller collections of books? Thanks in advance!

Hi Carrie,
Bookmans credit never expires, so it will definitely still be good by the time the store reopens.
As far as the smaller collection of books goes, we'll be setting up donation days in the Flagstaff community in the upcoming weeks where we'll be buying smaller collections.
Thanks!
