What do you get when you cross Fantasy with a Horror Film? In this particular case you get Hausu (House), a kaleidoscopic trip into a cinematic magical kingdom.
Made in 1977 by Japanese ad guru Nobuhiko Obayashi (director of the infamous Mandom commercials with Charles Bronson) Hausu is such a delight that after seeing it you will be left humming its catchy theme song.
The plot is simple, seven girls take off to the Japanese countryside to visit an estranged aunt. Once the girls arrive, the aunt and her house are not quite an innocent as they seem and the girls disappear one by one. But it’s all set to the folksy pop of the band Godiego so it’s sweet and surreal throughout. And Obayashi’s visual style is so fun and innovative that you’ll be transfixed by the scenery and landscapes that he creates.
It’s rare to find a film that will leave you so transfixed and mystified as Hausu does, but it’s a true joy to behold. It will premiere subtitled in 35mm through Saturday at Madcap Theaters, presented by me, Midnite Movie Mamacita, and it’s truly a film experience you don’t want to miss!
And make sure you take part in our “find Snowflake” scavenger hunt. We have strategically hidden 10 Snowflake (the cat) decals around Madcap Theaters. They are all in places accessible to the general public. Come down and find all 10 decals, take a photo of them and win a Hausu poster! These are limited in quantity and a total collector’s item!
