What do Dr. Seuss, greyhound rescue groups, belly dancing, origami and author signings have in common? Well... nothing much, other than that they're all happening this weekend at a Bookmans near you!
We're kicking off the weekend early with our Bookmans Underground Cinema at the MADCAP Theaters in Tempe. Tonight at 8:00 p.m. We'll be presenting Grindhouse Redux, featuring “Three Dimensions of Greta” in 3-D and “Alvin Purple.” For $8 you get a double feature of foreign sultriness and a comedy romp. Get a babysitter and kick your weekend off right with a few groovy retro giggles.
On Saturday, we're celebrating the birthday of the wild, weird and wacky Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known around the world as Dr. Seuss! The beloved author would have been 106 this year, so Bookmans Phoenix is saying “Happy Birthday!” by throwing him a fantastical and fabulous party from 10:00 a.m. to noon, complete with cupcakes, Seuss-style games, awesome prizes, fun activities, and of course, Seuss story time! Bring along the whole family for this fun-filled event!
Bookmans is also proud to feature not one, not two, but three author signings on Saturday as well! In our Speedway store we'll welcome author and poet Marlene Tova Fineberg and her latest work, “Elephants, Alligators, Umbrellas,” for a signing and meet-and-greet from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. At our Phoenix store, we welcome self-published sci-fi/fantasty author Tim Boyer from noon to 2:00 p.m., for a signing of his latest book in the Mirror Gate Chronicles, “The Quest: A Mirror Gate Chronicle.” After our Seuss celebration in Mesa, we're proud to present Charline Ratcliff, author of “The Curse of Nefertiti” for an in-store signing and meet-and-greet at 3:00 p.m.
If music is more up your alley, be sure to check out the amazing Brook Adams, who will be performing the Beatles' album “Abbey Road” using only his ukulele and his voice, Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at our Phoenix store. Brook will then give free ukulele lessons afterward, but make sure you bring your own ukulele!
Maybe you're out there looking for that special someone for Valentine's Day – if so, come warm your heart and meet a forever friend at Bookmans on Saturday! Arizona Greyhound Rescue will be at our Ina location from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and Arizona Adopt a Greyhound will be at our Phoenix store from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. You can't resist those big puppy eyes...
Looking to learn a few new skills? How about the delicate Japanese art of paper folding, or the exotic belly dance? The Arizona Origami Society will feature a class on the art of making paper into creatures, shapes and whatever else your imagination can create at our Phoenix store on Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Our amazing belly dancing instructor, Morgianna, will also be at Phoenix from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. – she'll teach you to shake those hips and love that belly!
On Sunday, we're welcoming local author Karen Chow at Bookmans Mesa at 2:00 p.m. for a signing of her latest book, “The Prophecy Box.” Karen discovered her love of writing while she was a student at ASU, and finished her latest novel during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in November 2008.
Last but not least, check out the Across Plus Anime Club at our Phoenix store on Sunday evening, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. A social club that emphasizes anime and role playing, they also discuss video games, culture and other hobbies. Come check out the newest and hottest games. Kids 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
You can always check our events calendar for details on these events, or for more fun and interesting activities coming up at your nearest Bookmans!
