Bookman's Blog

Who has two thumbs and loves everything from film, comics, and video games to costume design, books, and art? This girl right here! Now in it's eighth year, the Phoenix ComiCon has become a a definite contender in conventions not to be missed. Now dubbed “the signature pop-culture event of the southwest”, I have to be honest, I enjoy it even more than the San Diego ComiCon. In the last five years I have attended PCC, I have seen the convention outgrow it's current venue and continue to get bigger and better. The level of programming and professionalism has continually blown me away every single year. While not one to normally "fangirl" I have to admit I am incredibly excited about Felicia Day, Will Wheaton, and James Marsters. To think of all three in the same room at the same time? I think my world just exploded.

I am proud to announce a budding partnership with Kids Need To Read. As it's known on the vast world of the internet, KNTR, "Works to create a culture of reading for children by providing inspiring books to under-funded schools, libraries and literacy programs." Seems like a perfect fit for Bookmans. Why is KNTR an official non-profit recipient of this years convention? Simple, check out the organization's founders:

PJ Haarsma, Founder

PJ Haarsma is the author of The Softwire series, creator of the online game Rings of Orbis, and presenter and speaker on behalf of children’s literature. He is the recipient of the ABC (Association of Booksellers for Children) New Voices in Children’s Literature Award. PJ’s efforts to incorporate new technology as a literacy tool were featured in the prestigious Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literature and The New York Times. He uses his position as an author to garner publicity, support and funds for the organization. He is the father of a young daughter who loves books.

Nathan Fillion, Co-founder

Widely recognized for being adept at both drama and comedy, actor Nathan Fillion commanded the screen as the beloved anti-hero, Captain Malcolm Reynolds, in the critically-acclaimed television series, Firefly (2002), and its big-screen spin-off, Serenity (2005). He is currently starring in the ABC television series, Castle. Nathan's parents are both English teachers, giving him a profound respect for the importance of literacy. He was instrumental in the founding of Kids Need to Read and continues to enthusiastically support the foundation.

Bookmans is a proud sponsor of this years Geek Prom & Celebrity Rock Band Party with appearances by Felicia Day & Will Wheaton. Expect a "geek-tacular" experience with a dance-off, prom pictures, and even crowning of Geek King & Queen! All proceeds from this fun new event will benefit Kids Need To Read. Keep an eye out for updates on our website as we roll out details for the Phoenix ComiCon and our participation in it!
