Bookmans News

Bookmans is proud to support the Arizona Browncoats as they team up with The Arizona Corsairs for fun-filled day of events celebrating the five years of Can't Stop the Serenity events.

September 19th is “Talk Like a Pirate” Day and the annual screening of the film Serenity at Madcap Theaters in Tempe. In commemoration of the fifth anniversary the Arizona Browncoats have teamed up with the Arizona Corsairs, who take piracy to a whole new level -- all in the name of charity, of course.

Beginning at noon this Sunday you are in for a lively day of entertainment for the entire family. Local comedy-punk band, Thunder Stump will play live to welcome Browncoats, Corsairs, and geeks of all types. Then the Arizona Corsairs will proudly present the Ice Pirates. Following the film, join the Corsairs for sword-fighting demos and belly dancing. The second half of the day brings you the global screening of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along blog and Joss Whedon's Serenity presented by the Arizona Browncoats. The day will culminate with a performance by Unwoman, a steampunk-cellist who travels all the way from San Francisco to share her haunting melodies.

The day promises a good time for all with raffles, CSTS merchandise, and more!

Can't Stop the Serenity is a fan-organized global fundraiser for Equality Now, an international organization dedicated to protecting women's rights around the world, as well as local women's charities. The "Browncoats" -- self-described fans of Firefly and Serenity -- started the screenings in honor of Whedon's birthday and to celebrate the beloved sci-fi western, all in the name of a cause close to Whedon's heart. Voted the valley's “Geeks With A Cause” in the 2009 Phoenix New Times Best of, the Arizona Browncoats are proud to be a part of worldwide events and screenings of the film Serenity to celebrate their love for all things Joss Whedon.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Equality Now and the Phoenix Children's Hospital. Over the last five years the Arizona Browncoats have donated over $40,000 to Equality Now and local charities such as the Women's Foundation of Southern Arizona, Fresh Start Women's Foundation, and Growth Improvement for Female Teens. Arizona Browncoats, Inc. is an established non-profit organisation in Arizona dedicated to promoting unity and equality. The Phoenix chapter holds their monthly shindig on the first Saturday of every month at 7 p.m. at Bookmans Phoenix.
