Keep in mind I'm not a big video gaming person, but the first game I remember playing is a piece of gold entitled Howard The Duck: Adventure On Volcano Island made for the hi-tech Commodore 64. This gem took full advantage of the Commodore's superior 1982 sound and graphics.
This epic is set as a sequel to the movie. There is a new Dark Overlord in town (the villain in the movie) and he knows that Howard - and his mastery of Quack-Fu - is the only thing that can stop him from taking over the world. So while Howard (who is now a rockstar) is on stage hamming it up, the Dark Overlord comes in, kidnaps Howard's girlfriend Beverly, and whisks her away to Volcano Island. Ain't that some drama?
You, playing as Howard, must go to Adventure Island to rescue the beloved Beverly. You must survive the deadly quicksand, maneuver jet skies through shark-infested waters, and battle the Dark Overlord's evil henchmen... which kind of resemble Gary Oldman's Dracula...You know, at the beginning? With the Carrie Fisher pseudo-hair?
I used to skip school quite a lot to come home in the afternoon - well, to watch Days Of Our Lives mostly - but also to play this game. What fun-filled afternoons those were filled with both tears and terror.
Speaking of which, I included the box art, and if anyone comes across this holy grail, feel free to send it on to me. We could host a Howard game night and follow it up with Spice World Dance Dance Revolution - it would be Quack-Tastic!
