This weekend is packed with a plethora of community and in-store events for music and book lovers, families, geeks, and even roller derby enthusiasts.

TONIGHT, September 17th, at the Loft Cinema in Tucson, 6:30 p.m.: Can't Stop the Serenity 2009: Serenity and Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog Double Header, presented by the Arizona Browncoats and Bookmans Entertainment Exchange. Watch Joss Whedon's Serenity and Dr. Horrible in a theater packed with fellow fans, all in the name of fighting violence against women. $8 admission. All proceeds benefit Equality Now and Women's Foundation of Southern Arizona.

And on Saturday the 19th: The Tempe edition of Can't Stop the Serenity 2009 will take over MADCAP Theaters for TWO double header showings of Serenity and Dr. Horrible. Screenings are at 12:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Admission is $10. All proceeds benefit Equality Now and $1 from every ticket sold will support MADCAP Theaters, Tempe's new non-profit community theater.

Also on Saturday: Bookmans is a proud sponsor of the Family Dance Stage at Flagstaff's Pickin' in the Pines Bluegrass Festival. Bookmans will be on hand to pass out gift certificates and free t-shirts as you enjoy the this year's stellar line-up of traditional and acoustic bands. Visit the Festival website for the line-up and ticket information.

Join us for Challenged/Banned Books Story Time at Bookmans Phoenix on Saturday, 12-1 p.m. We'll be reading poems from A Light in the Attic, Shel Silverstein's oft-challenged classic. We'll be making Silverstein bookmarks, too! And at Bookmans Ina, Lisa Otey and the Otey School Musicians will perform two hours of live music, 6-8 p.m. The group features some of Tucson's best young performers - don't miss out!

On Saturday, September 19th, at 7 p.m., the Arizona Derby Dames wrap their fourth season of roller derby at Arizona Memorial Coliseum with the Arizona Derby Dames Championships. Will the Runaway Brides be able to fend off the Brutal Beauties and retain their championship title? This marks AZ Derby Dames' last set of bouts as a flat-track roller derby league - they become a banked track league in 2010. The Arizona Derby Dames are partnering with The Manna House and are asking for donations to help abused women and their children. Please bring a donation of two or more items of non-perishable food, women’s or children’s clothing, hygiene products, toys, bikes, or school supplies and receive $2 off general admission or floor tickets or $5 off VIP tickets. Visit the Manna House website for more information.
