It's time for the Arizona Derby Dames playoffs for their first banked track roller derby season. Bookmans is a proud sponsor of the Dames, and August 21 will be a triple-header at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum! Who will take home the championship?

After bringing Phoenix double-header banked track roller derby all season long, the Arizona Derby Dames now bring you a triple header for the 2010 playoffs event on Saturday, August 21 at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum on the Arizona State Fairgrounds. The undefeated Schoolyard Scrappers have already earned their trip to the September 25 championship game. Now it’s time to see who will face them for the Arizona Derby Dames first banked track roller derby title, with the opportunity still up for grabs to the remaining four teams in the league. First up, the Bombshells will take on the Runaway Brides, followed by the Coffin Draggers vs. the Brutal Beauties. The winners of each of those games will face each other in a third game, with the winner advancing to the September 25 championship.

Each of the three games during the playoffs will consist of two 18-minute halves, with each game played consecutively. First up, the second ranked Bombshells face the fourth place Runaway Brides in a rematch to their intense July game, which was neck-and-neck for most of the night. The Bombshells prevailed in July with a score of 107 to 91. In the last matchup of the Coffin Draggers (currently ranked 3rd) and the Brutal Beauties (5th ranked), the Draggers prevailed with a score of 134 to 60. But with personnel changes since that game on both teams, and guest fill-ins from the Schoolyard Scrappers on both teams during these playoff games, the dynamics of both teams have shifted since their last match up.

Don’t miss an intermission show between Games 2 and 3: a black-and-white scrimmage featuring Arizona Derby Dames Fresh Meat. The newest Derby Dames are nearing the end of their training and are ready to debut their skating skills for the first time at the playoffs. Come cheer on and get to know some of the Arizona Derby Dames newest talent. Fresh Meat trainer Frankie Fitz will be coaching the Black Dahlia team, while Arizona Derby Dames training manager Rowdy Roulette will be leading the White Oleanders.

Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum is located at 1826 W. McDowell Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85007, (602) 252-6771. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. with the bouts starting at 7:00 p.m. On August 21, the Arizona State Fair Bar & Grill on the lower level of the Coliseum will open at 5:00 p.m. for dinner before the bout. General admission tickets for the stadium seats in the Coliseum will be $12. Two hundred general admission tickets are available for standing room on the floor around the track for $12. General admission for children 12 and under is free. VIP tiered seating right off the floor (with access to a nearby VIP only bar and restrooms) will be $20 for adults and children. Parking will be $10. Tickets will be on sale the day of the event at the Coliseum box office starting at 4:00 p.m. Advance tickets may be purchased until 2:00 p.m. on August 20 at http://tickets.arizonaderbydames.com, where group discounts are also available. Stick around for the after-party right inside the Coliseum at the Arizona State Fair Bar & Grill, with live music from The Limit Club. Meet with the Arizona Derby Dames over some great food and drink and discuss the night’s bouts. All ages are welcome, but you must be over 21 to be served at the bar.

Only a handful of modern all-women skater-operated roller derby leagues in the world own and skate on a banked track. Arizona Derby Dames are proud to be bringing a traditionally inspired brand of roller derby with a new age twist to Phoenix. In 2010, Arizona Derby Dames joined the ranks of roller derby leagues like the Los Angeles Derby Dolls, the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls in Austin, Red Dirt Rebellion Rollergirls in Oklahoma City and the San Diego Derby Dolls that are the new breed of unscripted, ultra-competitive, 100% real banked track roller derby.
