I was in a terrible mood until I remembered that somewhere, a child is starting school.

Since 1987, New Beginnings for Women & Children has provided homeless women in Tucson the support they need to become financially self-sufficient and to be able to keep their housing and their families secure. The program offers a family shelter, as well as transitional housing, an aftercare program, and a special children’s program that addresses the emotional and educational needs of children who have lived through the stress of homelessness.
Here I go with a little shameless self-promotion: My friend, Elizabeth J. Colen and I (Kate Beles) will be reading poetry and nonfiction tonight at Uptown Billiards at 6:00 p.m. Elizabeth will be reading from her new book Money for Sunsets, which won the Steel Toe Book Award and Denise Duhamel calls "David Lynch meets Gertrude Stein." I will be reading from a new series of poems, some of which recently appeared in Gulf Coast, and my latest nonfiction essay "Good Fortune." We'll be talking a lot about sex and death while drinking Uptown whiskey, all before dinner. In other words, it'll be a literary bad-girl happy hour. Sound like your kind of fun? We hope so.

"Shaken, not stirred" was the saying of the day as our customers enjoyed martinis and casino games in the store today. Like something straight out of a James Bond movie, we had a roulette table and a vivacious young woman serving mocktails (made to look like a martini, but actually just lemonade). To celebrate Movie Madness Month we decided to pay tribute to celluloid's favorite secret agent. In addition to drinks and games, we had a screening of James Bond's first film adventure, Dr. No. Rounding out the event was James Bond trivia, with the winner getting a trade credit and a Bookmans t-shirt! Howdy! Since Bookmans is celebrating Movie Madness Month all of August, I thought I'd step in and share some of my own Movie Madness, courtesy of the Midnite Movie Mamacita at MADCAP Theaters.
The Art of a Bad Movie...what makes a movie so bad that it's good as opposed to just being plain bad? Many factors contribute, but take some of these weekends’ selections that we are showcasing at MADCAP Theaters. We have The Room, now a cult sensation and ambassador for bad movies. What makes THE ROOM so bad, but good that people come month after month to see it on the big screen? Sincerity is the key. Tommy Wiseau didn't set out to make a bad movie, he spent $5-7 million on his epic masterpiece (the source of the funding remains a mystery). But it was made with a whole-hearted sincerity and intent to make a good movie that only after its release took on a whole new life.

Summer is drawing to a close, and that means one thing... it's time for a Back to School party!
Today was a blast at Bookmans Ina as we celebrated one more time before school starts. Kids came to party and we were prepared! Silly Tassie was on hand to do face painting and balloon animals. Faces were painted like Spongebob and Spider-man, we also saw an octopus, reindeer, and flowers just to name a few. Balloons filled the party in the shape of swords, hats, dragonflies, bumble bees, dinosaurs, you name it and Silly Tassie made it! A party wouldn't be a party without punch and cookies, so there were plenty to go around. To cap it off all the kids who came left with pencils and erasers to put in their backpacks for the first day of school. Sadly, this was the last Summer Kids Event of 2010 but we always have fun events for kids year round so be sure to stop by for the fun!

Party pics can be found here on the Flickr page! See you next Summer!

I find that on a daily basis, I see more people plugged into things than not. Sometimes I am only vaguely aware of them and on days like today, I am severely annoyed. Are we truly this narcissistic and bored on a societal level that we cannot run errands (or pee) without updating, texting, or talking to someone else? I’ve observed a coworker walking from one side of the warehouse to the other texting--apparently they felt the need to text someone unknown about their journey. I have wasted many minutes talking to someone only to find that they had ear buds in and could not hear me. We have become part Borg. I look around and my coworkers are hunched at computer terminals with wires coming from their heads attached to many small devices.

This blog will have to be about something different. Something cooler than last time... something less nerdy... this one will have to be about Hollywood and its superior skills at deceiving people with the simplest of tricks. The first completely overused tactic employed by Hollywood is the use of coincidence. This can be seen in just about any movie ever, but a prime example of it showing up is during the movie Training Day. The major coincidence in this movie is when the main character Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) is about to be executed by three gangsters, when they suddenly rifle through his wallet and find a picture of one of their cousins.
