I can't talk about Love of Reading month without talking about Bookmans! Before I started working here, at Bookmans, I read some but definitely not as much as I do now. As a kid I didn't really read at all, most of my book reports were written by reading the back of the book. I was a slower reader then most kids, which was embarrassing, so I just stopped. In 2004 I read this book I borrowed from the library called "Lamia: A Witch by Georgia Taylor," it was amazing and I enjoyed it more than I had ever enjoyed any book before.

During February, we've been having a Love of Reading Contest, where you, our loyal and fabulous customers and readers, tell us what inspired your love of reading for a chance to win a $50 Bookmans gift certificate. Now, we'd love to give everyone who had wonderful, inspiring entries a $50 gift certificate, but we'd go broke... so we'd like to take a few moments to recognize some of our favorite runner-up entries. Thank all of you so much for your wonderful and inspiring entries during our contest. It's been really interesting to see such a variety of books and stories inspiring people to read.

When I was 13, I was only vaguely familiar with the work of Tool. When I was 14, my aunt took me to see them at UNLV. I was exhilarated, I was captivated, I was in love. To date, that concert was the single greatest experience of my life. I left that stadium a lifelong fan of Tool and Maynard James Keenan.

Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive... who is you-er than you. Shout loud, “I am lucky to be what I am! Thank goodness I’m not just a clam or a ham, or a dusty old jar of sour gooseberry jam! I am what I am! That’s a great thing to be! If I say so myself, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!"
With those words, we kicked off Dr. Seuss' 106th birthday party. Mesa Bookmans was proud to join up with Bookpals, whose art of storytelling made some of Dr. Seuss' classics come to life. We all gathered around, in our "Cat in the Hat" toppers, entering into a world filled with loraxes, Thing One and Thing Two, and of course, "Green Eggs And Ham." We all became part of the stories with such fun games like musical feet and chairs.

There are few things in life more satisfying than a good book. All my life I have been mocked for my open enjoyment of the written word. Sometimes I feel guilty about the time I have dedicated to the selfish act of losing myself in the stories of others. At other times, like now, I want to shout about it. I want others to share this feeling of overwhelming contentment with life. I want them to experience the joy I find between the covers of a good book.

I've always felt that working at Bookmans was like working with one large extended family. I come to work every single day to a group of people who are just as passionate, caring, and giving as I am. My favorite part of the day is walking through the door and having a handful of employees greet me with a wave or smile. Granted, we all have our “off days”, but those are few and far between.

We'll admit it, we don't just go to the toy fair to check out the latest and greatest in toys, games and stuffed animals for our wonderful Bookmans' customers. We do it because, inside, we're really just a bunch of kids. And guess what? It's GREAT. This year's 2010 Toy Industry Association's Toy Fair in New York City was awesome...and not just because we photobombed it (more to come on that in a minute), but because it's great to see all of these innovators and enthusiasts presenting great products for us to bring back to our customers at Bookmans. And, we'll also admit, we did see our fair share of stuff that we want to bring back for ourselves, too.

We managed to save a good portion of the stock from the relatively undamaged, but definitely wet and dirty, back room.

The kids gathered around BOOKMAN to enjoy a special story time and then received a fabulous Bookmans t-shirt. Students each took a turn hugging and high-fiving the superhero before settling into a morning of reading. BOOKMAN will continue to make special appearances at schools throughout February in celebration of Love of Reading month. So keep an eye to the sky - he might be visiting your school next! Bookmans Phoenix had a little something for everyone this past weekend. As part of our Love Of Reading Month, we kicked off the day with a birthday party for Dr. Seuss that included story time, thanks to Brenda from BookPALS; birthday cupcakes; games; giveaways; and arts & crafts. Everyone who joined in on the fun went home with a free copy of a Dr. Seuss book of their choice. We spent the morning tooting our birthday blow horns and reading our favorite Dr.Seuss books to each other! What fun! You can see more pictures from our fabulous event here on Flickr.

Since we don't have our usual location (our store!) for community events, we've been taking the same activities that we would normally sponsor out into the community! One of our weekly events is storytime, so the Knoles Elementary School librarian, Mary Lara, needed some people to help with their Book Fair, which we thought would be a great opportunity to continue our weekly story time. We also normally host an animal adoption event each week, and so Second Chance Center for Animals welcomed us into their orientation and behavior classes so we could start helping out there. Our first week sans our store was full of kids and puppies!

Kids came in and made super cool pop-up books that expressed their personal love of reading. With Valentine's day so close, lots of the kids used heart shapes to make lovely pop-up book Valentines. A few kids opted for the cool dragonfly, and others did designs straight from their imaginations. A big thanks to everyone who came out and participated in this awesome arts and crafts event!!
If you missed the first pop-up book event, don't despair - you can join us on February 20th at Bookmans Speedway. We're celebrating Love of Reading all month long, so be sure to check out our website for more cool events and contests throughout the month!!

When we were young she spent a lot of her free time teaching me how to read. I fondly remember reading every single Little Golden Book that I could get my hands on. Because of this, when I started going to school I was already ahead of the curve in the reading department! It allowed a smooth transition into school and a whole new chapter into why I loved to read. I was a huge fan of reading incentive programs because what child doesn't love to receive a reward for doing something they already enjoy?

Exhibitors of all types and services were set up at the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force Museum to show off what our beautiful city has to offer. Bookmans was on hand providing attendees with free Bookmans Cafe House Blend coffee samples and delectable pastries, just a small sample of what we offer at our new Cafe at our Mesa store! Not only did attendees have a quick pick me up and breakfast, but everyone was able to take home a free book and brand new Bookmans tote bag. Who could resist free coffee, pastries, and a book? I know I couldn't!

Since 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, customers from toddlers to teenagers and their parents created their very own ferocious tiger masks. We also peeked into our future with yummy fortune cookies and learned about which animal we were, based on the 12-animal Chinese Zodiac Calendar. Together, we made up one silly zoo full of Chinese New Year fun! Fabulous pictures from our Chinese New Year celebration are here on our Flikr page.

Carter Fox stumbles upon a mysterious signal that he thinks is foreign to our planet. Though he's always had his suspicions about paranormal activity, his friend, Chrissy, dismisses it as his overactive imagination. But with this signal growing stronger, and the looming fear that someone is watching him, Carter can't help but think that it's all connected to a significant, paranormal event from his past. As he searches for proof of a connection, he'll soon realize... there are signals everywhere.

Legend spoke of the wild beast Nien (also the word for "year" in Mandarin) that appeared at the end of each year, attacking and killing villagers. Loud noises and bright lights were used to scare the beast away, and thus, Chinese New Year celebrations were born.
This weekend, Bookmans Mesa celebrated the beginning of the Chinese New Year with an awesome in-store bash. To celebrate such a festive holiday, one must look the part. We were joined by Dawn from "Shys Designs," whose extraordinary face painting talents at face painting transformed all of our faces into tigers of all colors and stripes.
