Bookmans in Flagstaff had a local nonprofits fair and pie-tasting last Saturday, complete with pecan, pumpkin, and apple pies, plus a bunch of great representatives from such organizations as Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project, SeniorCorp and Habitat for Humanity.

Parents also discovered what they should work on to prepare for the exciting adventures that are 'kindergarten'.

I was working several jobs, including as a nanny for two girls’ age six and nine. Like my sister and I had been, Emily and Kyra were active girls, and involved in many different activities. Emily wanted to be in Brownies, so I volunteered to be the co-leader. Funny as it sounds, I became an adult member of the Girl Scouts of America! Not only did I get to rediscover all the fun stuff that we use to do in our own troop, but I also got to pass those activities to a new generation. Three years later, Girl Scouts set me on a course that changed my life.

Lots of shoppers took advantage of the 20% off coupon and generously donated food and cash to the Community Food Bank.

There has been a lot of press lately about some new vampires, the Twilight vampires. To be honest, I’m not a fan. I like my vampires seductively pale bundles of violence, not shiny, cuddly emo friends. So, I feel it’s my civic duty to recommend some vampires that don’t (if you’ll excuse the pun), suck.

Plenty of free food, drinks, prizes and of course celebrating all things local, brought people from all over the valley to the Duck & Decanter on 16th St. & Camelback.

Tons of comic-book characters, Star Wars Stormtroopers and Roller Girls roamed the Con as kids and collectors of all ages partook in the fun. Artists were on hand to sign autographs and take pics with fans and even Bob got into the act by taking a photo with an X-Wing Fighter!
Read More...This has been my hardest and most joyful year yet. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had days so full of joy and sorrow that it’s hard to remember to say thank-you, to look outside myself and remember to give back. When I do remember to look outside myself, I realize my friends, family, co-workers, even the strangers in my town, share many of the same problems and blessings. As you probably know, this is Bookmans Gives Thanks Month, and it’s a wonderful reminder to be grateful.

The pine needles have woven their prickly brown carpet on the ground. Pumpkins are everywhere. Soup has found its way onto the menu rotation in our house, and the heater has been officially re-commissioned. I now spend my weekends drinking hot coffee on the couch, snuggled under a blanket with a good book and a cat or two.
It’s the time of year when we reflect and are thankful for all the things (and non- things) we have. It’s the time of year when we think most about giving back and all the karmic benefits that come with the act of giving. And there are countless ways to share the blessings that we receive with those who need them most.
