Paul Sprawl graced Bookmans Phoenix on Saturday with an acoustic musical performance in our music and electronics department. His soulful, self-written composition and lyrics delighted customers as they shopped for their favorite used games and DVDs. He's a familiar face at the Bookmans in Flagstaff, but traveled down to the Phoenix store to share his talent with West Valley and for that we are grateful and truly enjoyed this original artist's skills! We hope to see him again in Phoenix soon. You can check out photos from the event here on our Flikr page.

This past Saturday at Bookmans Speedway we had our very first Music Hour with Nature! In this wonderfully interactive event, kids learned to play all kinds of different instruments, created their own songs, and one young man even performed a solo on the banjo.

Do you have a favorite Christmas tradition you refuse to vary?  When I was a kid, and even after we’d left home, my brother and I insisted that our family be very ritualistic about Christmas.  We had to eat dinner as a family on Christmas Eve, and then we turned-out all the lights but the tree, and sat listening to Willie Nelson’s “Pretty Paper” on the record player while drinking eggnog with nutmeg.  We would open one present apiece, unless, of course, there were an uneven number of presents, in which case the person with the most presents would open more until we had an even number for Christmas morning!

I love the Avett Brothers. Love them. They are the most played band in my (sizable) iTunes library. And, hands down, they are the best live show I’ve ever seen. That’s why I’m so excited that Bookmans is co-presenting (along with our friends at the Rialto Theatre) the Avett Brothers live in concert on May 7th at 8 p.m.

The set-up on stage was impressive, housing four percussionists, both string and brass sections, an acoustic guitar, a piano, and a mammoth harp. Dressed to the nines in tuxedos, the band opened with a spirited version of Ravel's Bolero that was deemed illegal in France, according to pianist and band leader Tom Lauderdale. Why? Pink Martini puts their own spin on the classic song. (Apparently that kind of creative freedom is frowned upon across the pond.) Once that performance grabbed everyone by the collar and drew them in, charming front woman China Forbes sauntered out to center stage.

YEEEAAAHHHHH! I have been wanting to hear this LP forever, well at least since I read about it in Ugly Things 23 from a couple of years back. And what did I find in my mailbox this afterlunch but a copy on CD-R, from Mockba, no less.

Scott Seward wrote an excellent piece on this record in Ugly Things Magazine, issue #23, which happens to be Chubby's acid rock album. I know that it sounds crazy, but this is a solid effort, featuring tons of soulful Hammond and acid-tinged guitar. His vocal delivery is awesome.

He even uses turned on lyrics: "How does it feel when you smoke by yourself, how does it feel when you trip with someone else?" from the song "How Does it Feel," obviously not anything to do with the Creation track.

Never one to be left out in the "I'm more metal than you, dude" argument, gEnE throws down an invite on Slayer... to be our new mariachi band for the holidays.

So back in the day I used to say that my two favorite musicians were Peter Gabriel and Stevie Wonder. Then someone just called to say I love you, and Stevie dropped off that list.

Originally garnering attention as "those cello chicks in corsets" who opened for Marilyn Manson in 1996, Rasputina graced the stage at Club Congress late Sunday night, their stubby fingernails mercilessly wringing a frenetic beauty from the fretless necks of their instruments. It was really more talent than a pair of ears deserves.
