Who eats Tofu anyway?
I was desperate to find healthy, well-balanced meals for my six-year-old who decided to become a vegetarian. The cookbook section at Bookmans offers an array of books to help me make healthy, tasty meals for the family to enjoy together. A Tofu Cookbook from the Soy Sisters and Friends is not only full of great recipes but each recipe is broken out into calories, protein, fat, cholesterol, fiber and sodium. As always Bookmans has exactly what I need, the helpful staff provide top-notch service and I pay half of the cover price for a book that has no signs of wear and tear.
Always a last minute shopper.
Read More...I recently celebrated two milestones, my sixth year of being employed at Bookmans and two years of handling Community Relations for our Phoenix and Mesa locations. It seems like only yesterday I was working behind a hotel front desk when one of our guests told me he was the contractor for a new bookstore opening up around the corner. Imagine my excitement when I found out who it was. I had been shopping at the Mesa and Flagstaff locations for about five years at that point. The next day he brought in a business card for the store's manager and said they were hiring. I sent off my resume and received a call back to schedule an interview. Based on previous experiences, I had dressed up but felt over-dressed when I was greeted by a gentlemen wearing a Ramones t-shirt and beanie cap.

For the third weekend in May, we would like to recognize Kara Graham and Nick DeVries.

For the second weekend in May, we would like to recognize Ben Williams and Regina Schantz!

Personally, I enjoy sewing, paper arts and drawing in my free time. However, at Bookmans we have some incredibly talented people!

In August 2009 a couple of us decided to challenge one another to create these miniature works of art. From two or three participants, word of mouth saw a sign up list with 15 people wanting to give it a try.

We don't have computers to look up inventory, which essentially forces Bookmans employees to "just know." It's very Tao. As employees we occasionally get big heads about our amassed knowledge. Then we get a request/book look that just knocks us off our knowledge mountain and reminds us that we do not "know" everything. One such event happened to me last weekend.

I’m sure that she was looking for food, but she found some open-hearted people who took her in and tried to find her a family. She was healthy but slightly underfed when she was found and she had a tag. It simply said “Kenya."

The original costume had seen many a community event and in-store appearance, resulting in BookMan looking a little too loved.

My mom was a "stay at home" mom in the late '70s. She ran a day care out of our house and, when my sister and I were old enough, she was an assistant at our grammar school. She was always there.

As Grant Store Manager Marshall puts it: "All degrees of face whisker are encouraged, from moustache fingers to Groucho greasepainters. In fact often the most busted-looking soup strainer is a fan favorite." Big thanks to the customers and employees who made Mustache Day 2009 a big hairy success. Here's a handful of our favorite snapshots from the day - see the rest (as well as pics from past Mustache Days) in our Flickr.

For those not in the know, the VM is in charge of creating and maintaining the constantly rotating displays that help make trips to Bookmans fun and surprising.
I’ve tried four or five times to begin this article, an article about a thing I do that takes a lot of time and care, something that is such a part of who I am, a natural extension of my being, that I have trouble describing it. In a way it’s like explaining why I wear shoes or metabolize hydro-carbons. Why do I make a zine? What is a zine?
It’s a kind of insanity surrounded by little scraps of paper I’ve photocopied and cut out from old books. Pieces of letters and postcards from friends. Original drawings, some comics, a kick ass cover illustration I really should have had to pay money for. Stories from friends who I’ve asked to give me stories because I know that life is more than just playing video games and drinking beer. It is, you know. Am I crazy for saying that?
