Bookmans

For the last two days, several members of the Bookmans staff and myself have been setting up our booth at the 2010 Phoenix Comicon at the Phoenix Convention Center. A lot of time and love has gone into the decision making that it required to come up with the really cool items that we will have available for the convention attendees.

This year everyone will be spinning our prize wheel, hoping to win one of our exclusive Bookmans Phoenix Comicon t-shirts. My favorite part? It's always free to win Bookmans schwag! What I am really looking forward to over the weekend is to see months of planning come together for the First Annual Kids Need to Read Geek Prom that Bookmans is sponsoring.

The only thing that makes living in Arizona tolerable is the handful of used bookstores scattered amongst the multitude of meth labs and Sonoran hot dog/ammunition stands that litter the landscape like so many would-be-immigrant bones in the Nogales Desert.

I don’t know how they survive in the state ranked 49th in the union for education and whose border militia dwarfs the Democrat population 6 to 1, but thank Rao that they do, ‘cause I don’t think I could make it through the week without them.

My absolute-hands-down-favorite of the lot is the Bookmans Entertainment Exchange stores, because entering one of their locations is like stepping through a stargate into a parallel world, wherein the concept of pawn shops was pioneered by a gang of good looking hipsters.

The Phoenix Film Festival celebrated it's 10th Anniversary last Thursday with an amazing opening night Gala. However, the future of film was hanging out on Saturday morning. For the first time in the decade long run, The Phoenix Film Festival introduced a new program, Kids Day! Bookmans was on board this year as the presenting sponsor. Kids Day is an all new Saturday morning event centered around future film makers and actors alike targeted at ages 5-12. While kids were moving from station to station learning the ins and outs of what happens behind the camera, at the Bookmans table we were creating souvenir tote bags to take home all of the neat goodies!

Everyone knows that Bookmans proudly supports ideas such as literacy, free speech, animal welfare and the environment. But did you know that we love sports? Personally, I am excited about the upcoming spring training schedule for Phoenix. But there are many young sports enthusiasts who are gearing up for the spring little league season! Young men and women are currently registering and trying out with teams all over the valley for the opportunity to play on a team.

We always appreciate when one of our customers takes the time to blog about us, but sometimes we're just plain blown away. Retired political consultant and full-time artist/photographer J.R. Corkrum tells his Bookmans story in a "Postcard from Tucson." It's a blog post full of photos of Bookmans Speedway and - we think - an all-encompassing portrait of what the Bookmans experience is - and should be - like.

Phoenix turned out its largest Pride celebration to date this past weekend, with over 30,000 people in attendance this year. Visitors arrived from the Mesa/Phoenix area as well as Flagstaff, Tucson and surrounding states, and Bookmans celebrated our diversity by being the only entertainment exchange - or book or CD store for that matter - in the middle of it all.

Follow the Reader, a blog for those who "read and recommend books," held an impromptu discussion on Twitter last Friday about how booksellers viewed Twitter in the workplace. Many members of the Bookmans staff are active on Twitter and a few chimed in on how the service has integrated into our everyday work routine.

The AVN Entertainment Expo, also known as the Porn Show, was held in two halls in the Sands Convention center next to the CES show, and the co-mingling of geeks and porn people in the lobby was priceless. As one would expect, much of the talent was dressed in very revealing outfits, and if I had a nickel for every CES attendee in uncomfortable shoes shooting sidelong glances (or outright staring) at the copious amounts of flesh on display, I’d be yada yada…  Comedy gold.

Recently I traveled to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and, as usual, it was really frickin' cool. Gadgets, giant TVs, pulsing sound (I’m looking at you, Earthquake Sound! My bowels are still vibrating!), computers, inventions, robots - it was sci-fi made real! Wandering the aisles and checking out all the new offerings with fellow geeks gave me a feeling of rightness that I seldom get outside of my home turf. And the best part is most of them want you to touch their stuff and play with it.

I’ve tried four or five times to begin this article, an article about a thing I do that takes a lot of time and care, something that is such a part of who I am, a natural extension of my being, that I have trouble describing it. In a way it’s like explaining why I wear shoes or metabolize hydro-carbons. Why do I make a zine? What is a zine?

It’s a kind of insanity surrounded by little scraps of paper I’ve photocopied and cut out from old books. Pieces of letters and postcards from friends. Original drawings, some comics, a kick ass cover illustration I really should have had to pay money for. Stories from friends who I’ve asked to give me stories because I know that life is more than just playing video games and drinking beer. It is, you know. Am I crazy for saying that?

For nearly 17 years, Bookmans Entertainment Exchange has been an important part of Flagstaff’s consumer and cultural landscape. Customers could count on live performances every weekend from musicians who would set up shop on a small stage in the front of the store, where they were surrounded by coffee-sipping patrons seated on big, comfy couches. But last August, the stage was removed. The café, too, was gone. And now, thanks to a lease dispute with their landlord, Flagstaff-based LNN Enterprises, Inc., Bookmans’ presence in Flagstaff has been put in jeopardy

So begins the long tale of woe that's left a hole in the community where our little cafe once stood.
