Stop by our Flagstaff cafe on Thurs, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. for an evening with Lori B. Girshick, author of Transgender Voices: Beyond Men and Women, "a revealing look at the lives and perspectives of transgender and gender variant people, based on 150 personal interviews."
In anticipation of Flagstaff's LGBT event of the year, Pride in the Pines 2008, author, teacher, and social justice advocate Lori B. Girshick will read and sign her latest book, Trangender Voices: Beyond Men and Women, at BOOKMANS FLAGSTAFF on Thursday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m.
Trangender Voices compiles 150 interviews with transpeople who share their thoughts on social norms, expectations, and pressures, and relate their personal stories of transgressing gender. In the book, Girshick strives to "demonstrate that there is nothing inherently binary about gender, that the way each of us experiences our own gender and our own gender variance is, in fact, normal and natural."
What others have to say about Transgender Voices:
"...speaks with wisdom, complexity, and insight on a topic key to our understanding of men, women, and everyone else."
- Jennifer Finney Boylan, author of She's Not There and I'm Looking Through You"...will become required reading for my sociology of gender and psychology of gender classes... The personal testimonies from [Girshick's] interviews are very compelling and touched my heart."
- Allison Elise Cleveland, Executive Director, The Gender Center, Inc.
Girshick will sign after the reading and snacks will be provided.
