EVENTS: Siccing Subpar Seventies Cinema on Valley Film Freaks!

        BY: MIDNITE MOVIE MAMACITA

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the theater, the Midnite Movie Mamacita scrapes the bottom of the vault to present another blast-from-the-past dose of her usual high-grade bad Bijou.

Grindhouse Redux is presented by Bookmans Entertainment Exchange.

"Keep telling yourself it's only a Grindhouse Redux...it's only a Grindhouse Redux...it's only a Grindhouse Redux!!!"

First stop is The Bus is Coming (1971), a dawn-of-blaxploitation indie focusing on racial hatred and revenge in a black 'hood in Los Angeles, scene of the 1965 Watts riots. Barely released in '71 and rarely seen since, this earnest but failed foray into interracial bloodshed actually earned a few charitable reviews but wound up being dumped on the market as a typical "Get Whitey!" actioner, complete with a lurid blaxploitation ad campaign: "The Bus is Coming...The Man can't stop it! Don't miss it!"

Next up? Raunchy revelry at  Hollywood High (1976), a teen T&A comedy about a quartet of horny high school honeys who go looking for love in the backs of vans, pizza parlors and all the other usual wrong places. Featuring a no-name cast of unpromising young newcomers who display their pre-implant era charms at the drop of a smutty joke (not to mention a horrific Henry Winkler impersonator whose character is called "The Fenz"), this bottom-of-the-locker groan-fest is one seriously flunked-up film. Grade? F!

        Friday, April 25: The Bus is Coming @ 9 p.m., Hollywood High @ 11 p.m.

        Saturday, April 26: The Bus is Coming @ 5 & 9 p.m., Hollywood High @ 7 & 11 p.m.

Admission is $6. The Chandler Cinemas are located at 2140 N. Arizona Boulevard, Chandler (behind Target), (480) 821-1605.
