Tucson's own Scream Queen dishes on Lloyd Kaufman and the upcoming "Poultrygeist," the women in horror who have influenced her, and starring and producing in her own feature film.
Hey kiddos, it's your ol' buddy Sammy Hain! Welcome to a very special episode of Cinema Of The Forsaken. No, not like "The Bicycle Shop Owner Has Been Touching Gary Coleman" Very Special Episode - I'm talking celebrity guest, and Tucson's own Scream Queen, Elske McCain. She has starred in a number of Forsaken-esque features and short films including "You're Next 3: Pajama Party Massacre," "Humble Pie," "The Goat Sucker," and "Splatter Movie: The Director's Cut." Man, I get all tingly just saying those titles.
The lovely McCain also makes many live appearances at film festivals and conventions across the country. Not forgetting her native Arizona, she also appears at local fright fests such as The Loft's Scream-O-Rama, My Tucson TV's The Very Bad Movie Very Bad Birthday Party, and on Sept. 21 will be at The Loft's Premiere of "Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead" along with legendary director Lloyd Kaufman.
Ms. McCain has graciously agreed to submit herself to a round of:
Cinema Of The Forsaken, Celeb 10Q
Elske - can I call you, Elske? Let me just say you made a fantastic Vampiria at The Very Bad Movie Very Bad Birthday. It seems you may soon be donning the guise of another horror host icon. What can you tell us about "The Search For The Next Elvira"?
Wow, what a way to start an interview! Though I was extremely grateful to be invited to the Queen Mary to meet Elvira, when the subject of Vampiria arose during my audition, it pretty much blew my chances out of the water. However I did touch base with Elvira at Comic-Con and there are no hard feelings.
Aw, I'm very sorry to hear that. Why does there always have to be such bad blood, when vampires get involved? Well, I know we're all looking forward to yours and Lloyd Kaufman's appearance at the "Poultrygeist" premeire next month. Tell us about what kind of event y'all have lined up for us.
Well, we're going to Borders for a signing at 7 p.m., and then at 9 p.m. Lloyd and I will be at The Loft for the screening and a Q&A after the film. And I just found out that we are going to have a contest called "Win a Dream Date with Lloyd & Elske!" The person who purchases the most tickets for the premiere gets to go out for dinner with Lloyd and I after the film!
Wow! Hear that kids? Buy early, and buy often! I'm particularly interested to hear more about your role as "Bikini Clad Protester". This sounds like a character I can really relate to, as a viewer.
I was there to stick it to The Man! But unfortunately I got all wet, so I had to take my top off!
Inspired! Like "Erin Brokovich" with just a dash of Pamela Anderson. How exactly did you happen to meet Lloyd Kaufman, and be dubbed with the title "Tromette?"
I met Lloyd when he was in town for a screening of "Toxic Avenger" in 2004. Being a huge horror fan he was impressed with my vast knowledge of the genre. We quickly hit off as friends and we have worked closely ever since.
I like to imagine, on cold lonely nights, that Scream Queens get to have a lot more fun with their scenes than other actors. Of all your movies do you have one scene which was your favorite to film?
Well, unfortunately my favorite scene that I had to film is unavailable. Last year I had the opportunity to work with my best friend Matthew Reel and my favorite actor, Trent Haaga, who starred in "Terror Firmer." But, on the bright side, we're all going to be working together again this year!
Your love of Blood and Guts Cinema started very young. What was it about this genre which sucked you in?
I like to be scared!
What is your opinion on the current crop of mainstream horror movies? Is there anything to look forward to coming out of Hollywood?
I'm really looking forward to the next Uwe Boll movie, "Postal."
With the man who brought us "House Of The Dead" and "BloodRayne" (both of which I've seen ten times), how can it miss? You know, ever since the Janet Jackson's Boob incident, it seems that horror movies have become the target of many censorship and parenting groups. What is your policy towards your own children; about what kinds of movies they're allowed to watch at different ages?
I let my daughter Silje choose whatever movies she wants to watch. She's already outgrown horror movies. Who knows, maybe she'll come back! My other daughter, Dahlia, tends to watch cartoons.
There seems to often be a perception that Horror is a pure Boy's Town. What female horror figures have been the biggest influence on you?
The biggest influence was Dee Wallace because she encouraged me early on in my career. Another more recent influence would be Amy Lynn Best for her work in the indie scene. I would also include Tiffany Shepis and Asia Argento because they're really hot.
I understand that you will be taking the title role in your next project. Tell us what horror fans have to look forward to from Elske McCain.
I'm producing my own feature film called "Jessicka Rabid." I play a girl who's been abused and enslaved by her family. One day she finally gets revenge. The movie was written and will be directed by Matthew Reel. It will also be starring Joe Knetter, Trent Haaga, J. Alan Johnson, newcomer Nekromistress, and my good friend Cici! We're going to film this fall - I'm really excited!
