At Grindhouse Redux you never know what you are going to get. I love the element of surprise that comes along with every screening of a fun flick with the Midnite Movie Mamacita.
At the Sept. 29 double feature of "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" and "The House of Insane Women," MMM warmed up the audience with a ghoulish exercise routine to the spooky song “Kinky Chorus Kick and Flash" by Pierre Raymonde and Bugs Bower, from the album "Erotic Aerobics". We rolled our hips, moved heel to toe, shook our scary butts, and made complete fools of ourselves. The audience members ate it up. And some even won a kick ass Grindhouse Redux shirt! Thanks Mamacita!
This screening was particularly exciting for me because it was the first one I had seen with trailers. I saw the preview for the disco favorite "Skate Town." It was chock full of big, feathered hair, tight lycra unitards, hot pink tights, and dorky guys with over-the-top cheesy grins. Love it! The Skeleton Cadaver also opened with a cartoon of a group of ghouls performing classic piano pieces as a nine piece orchestra. Pretty random. The best part was when a frustrated trombone player flipped off the skeletal conductor. That’s raw comedy folks.
On to the feature film, "The Lost Skeleton of Cadvra." One second you are cruisin’ along in your hot lil' Model-T Ford, red and convertible of course, the next moment you are being taken under mind control by a deranged skeleton. The basis of the story centers around a scientist and his feebled-minded wife who visit the country to discover a meteor said to have dropped close by. To thicken the plot, aliens are also visiting the area to capture a mutant pet that has been running wild on the hillside. The aliens are trapped on Earth until they can refuel their ships with Atmospherium, which they believe the humans have in their possession. Quotes made by the scientist to his wife such as “I’m a scientist, I don’t believe in anything” and “I’m going outside to DO SCIENCE” made this educational thriller a hoot. Between the ridiculousness of the scientist, aliens landing on Earth to capture their mutant that escaped, and the deranged skeleton laughing maniacally at just about everything, I would say that the Midnite Movie Mamacita has shared with us another great comedic horror film.
